In 2005 the American Society of Heating Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers Board of Directors (ASHRAE) adopted sustainability as the central theme for the organization’s Strategic Plan and committed to making the renovation of the society’s 35,000 sf headquarters building a demonstration of those intentions. The building renovation/addition includes ASHRAE’s new training center, meeting and education spaces for their members, a technical library, offices for personnel and a loading area and bulk storage. For this building a series of specific goals were generated to measure the project’s sustainable success; LEED Platinum became the overall measure while simultaneously exceeding ASHRAE Standards for air quality and energy consumption. Through aggressive partnerships, the project benefitted from domestic and international contributions of equipment, building materials and professional services.
